DESCRIPTION
Thousands of years ago, a race of beings known as Dark Elves tried to send the universe into darkness by using a weapon known as the Aether. Warriors from Asgard stop them but their leader Malekith escapes to wait for another opportunity. The warriors find the Aether and since it cannot be destroyed, they try to hide it. In the present day, Jane Foster awaits the return of Thor although it has been two years since they last saw once another. In the meantime, Thor has been trying to bring peace to the nine realms. Jane discovers an anomaly similar to the one that brought Thor to Earth. She goes to investigate, finds a wormhole, and is sucked into it. Back on Asgard, Thor wishes to return to Earth but his father, Odin refuses to let him. Thor learns from Heimdall, who can see into all of the realms, that Jane disappeared. Thor then returns to Earth just as Jane reappears. However, when some policemen try to arrest her, an unknown energy repulses them. Thor then brings Jane to Asgard to find out what happened to her. When the energy is released again, they discover that when Jane disappeared, she crossed paths with the Aether and it entered her. Malekith, upon sensing that the time to strike is now, seeks out the Aether. He attacks Asgard and Thor's mother Frigga is killed protecting Jane. Odin wants to keep Jane on Asgard so that Malekith will come. Thor disagrees with his plan, so with his cohorts, he decides to take Jane away. He enlists the aid of his brother, Loki. Unfortunately, Loki's motivations remain unknown.

TRAMA
Con il fratello Loki imprigionato dopo i fattacci narrati in Avengers e i nove mondi pacificati, Thor nei grandi palazzi di Asgard ha tempo di perdersi appresso alla nostalgia amorosa che da due anni lo separa dall'umana conosciuta nel primo film. Nel frattempo lei, sulla Terra, studiando delle anomalie comparse a Londra viene risucchiata da un portale e contaminata dall'Aether, una forza da millenni nascosta al malvagio Malekith e la sua razza che, proprio per l'unione tra la terrestre e la sostanza, si risveglia.
Determinato a trovare l'Aether e con questo sfruttare l'allineamento dei nove mondi per instaurare un regno d'oscurità, Malekith marcia per annichilire innanzitutto Asgard e poi la Terra.
Con Thor: the dark world parte la "seconda stagione" dei Vendicatori, quella che passerà per il secondo film di Capitan America, I guardiani della galassia e altri fino a giungere a Avengers: Age of Ultron. La serializzazione del cinema di grande incasso compie un nuovo passo in avanti in questo senso e i Marvel Studios dimostrano di ragionare come la casa editrice di fumetti che sono, trattando ogni film come un albo, portando avanti una trama autoconclusiva assieme a una sottotrama più grande che confluirà nel film che riunisce tutti i personaggi, ovvero il "finale di stagione".
Di certo dopo un primo fiacchissimo film incautamente affidato a Kenneth Branagh, Thor ha ora un trattamento a livello degli altri supereroi Marvel, con un film che non si perde nel cercare di elevare la materia che tratta ma che invece ne cavalca la sua componente più facile ed immediata per trovare l'intrattenimento e il divertimento più genuini. Merito di un team creativo che proviene dalla serialità televisiva e molto a suo agio con i personaggi Marvel.
È proprio questa resa al tono e al mood dei fumetti seriali americani di grande tiratura la caratteristica più evidente di questo nuovo film Marvel Studios. Se fino a ieri erano l'Hulk di Ang Lee o Scott Pilgrim vs. the world di Edgar Wright gli esempi più interessanti di fusione tra linguaggio del cinema e dei fumetti, adesso il cinema Marvel sta cercando un altro percorso per questa fusione e non intende farlo passando per montaggio o replica del sistema "a tavole" ma passando per la leggerezza e frivolezza con cui si raccontano apocalissi indicibili e per il rapporto che la storia instaura con lo spettatore. Non è difficile infatti intravedere in Thor: the dark world le fantasie di onnipotenza (vivere la vita reale e risolvere problemi reali con poteri immaginari) che si trovano anche in Spider-Man o negli X-Men (fumetti e film) e che mancavano al film precedente, il segno più evidente di un rinnovato approccio più in linea con il target d'elezione.
