"Apocalisse nel deserto" è uno straordinario pezzo di cinema realizzato da un regista al di fuori degli schemi chiamato Werner Herzog. Per Herzog il rapporto tra documento e rappresentazione, tra realtà e finzione è in continua fluttuazione e questo emozionante film ne è una perfetta dimostrazione. Subito dopo la fine della guerra in Iraq Herzog vede in televisione delle immagini dello spegnimento dei pozzi, ne intuisce la potenza visiva, contatta una troupe inglese con al capo il coproduttore Paul Berriff e gli commissiona una serie di filmati a volo di uccello sulle zone interessate. Quando Herzog arriva in Iraq, tutto il lavoro aereo è stato effettuato e dopo qualche settimana di riprese si torna a casa a montare. A questo punto comincia il lavoro del regista.
