Se aveste la possibilità di viaggiare nel tempo ritrovandovi nel passato, provereste a cambiare il futuro? È questa la domanda cardine di 22.11.63, mini-serie evento di 8 episodi con protagonista James Franco.
Inizialmente pensata come trasposizione cinematografica, la serie non vede la luce in questa forma a causa di disaccordi tra Stephen King e l’allora detentore dei diritti Jonathan Demme. Franco entra nel progetto durante le fasi iniziali della creazione della miniserie, avendo contattato lo scrittore per acquistare in un primo momento i diritti per la trasposizione, solo per scoprire che erano già in mano a J. J. Abrams.
Stephen King e J. J. Abrams firmano la sceneggiatura della serie, mettendo insieme un cast stellare che oltre a James Franco nei panni del protagonista conta anche il Premio Oscar Chris Cooper nei panni di Al Templeton. A chiudere il cast della serie troviamo Daniel Webber nei panni della nemesi Lee Harvey Oswald, Lucy Fry in quelli di sua moglie Marina e T.R. Knight nei panni di Johnny Clayton.
Il best-seller di Stephen King da cui è tratta la serie è stato pubblicato nel 2011 da Sperling & Kupfer e racconta la storia di Jake Epping, 35enne insegnante di inglese che grazie all’amico Al scopre un varco temporale in grado di portarlo nel 1958. Lo scopo di questo viaggio nel tempo sarà quello di sventare l’omicidio del Presidente Kennedy avvenuto il 22.11.63, riscrivendo così la storia moderna americana. Non importa quanto tempo Jake passi nel passato, al suo ritorno al presente saranno passati solo due minuti nei giorni nostri dalla sua assenza.
