Program Top of the Pops was broadcast for the first time on the day of the New 1964 and was broadcast from Studio A on Dickenson Road in Longsal, Manchester, which bought the company BBC Mancunian Films in 1954. In the first edition of TOTP, who led Jimmy Saville, were The Rolling Stones ( «I Wanna Be Your Man»), Dusty Springfield ( «I Only Want to be With You»), Dave Clark Five ( «Glad All Over»), The Hollies ( «Stay»), The Swinging Blue Jeans ( «The Hippy Hippy Shake») and The Beatles ( «I Want to Hold Your Hand» - charttopper weeks).
During the first three years of its existence, the program remained the main host Jimmy Saville: it succeeded in turn by Alan Freeman Pete Murray and David Jacobs. As the co-host (disc-girl) was presented mankunianskogo model Samantha Justa. Initially, the program did not do long-term rates, but it prderzhalas '42: aired in 2206 editions of TOTP, and in 70 years it attracted weekly to 15 million viewers since leaving in the evening on Thursday (On June 14, 1996 the program has been translated on Friday, which caused massive discontent, because it was imposed on the extremely popular television series Coronation Street, ITV).
Top of the Pops was the precursor to MTV in the music videos. In order not to come every week to the shooting, many groups recorded a bright, catchy videos that increase their chances of success in the hit parade. The Beatles with rollers for «Strawberry Fields Forever», «Rain», «Paperback Writer» and «Penny Lane» regarded as trendsetters in the music television in the 1960s. Clips for Top of the Pops filmed The Kinks ( «Dead End Sreet», 1966), David Bowie ( «Space Oddity», 1969), Small Faces, and other bands and performers of the 1960s. In 1970 they were joined by Queen, Black Sabbath. In the early 70-ies in TOTP were dance troupes (first - Pan's People, then Ruby Flipper, Legs & Co., Zoo), who performed "dance version of" hit single in the case, if the contractor for any reason not I was in the studio and has not provided a roller.
The show is constantly undergoing changes in design, style and conduct numerous details constantly staying modern. It was closely linked to the BBC Radio 1 and almost always it was the leading radio DJs of the channel (the only exception being the period from October 1991 to January 1994).
In the mid-1990s, when the popularity of the program waned, to reanimate it was called producer BBC Radio 1 Rick Blaxill. He went to a radical change: every week as the top began to invite celebrities. Among those who led the program were Kylie Minogue, 2 Unlimited, Chris Evans, Chris Eubank, Damon Elbarn and Jarvis Cocker.
Throughout history TOTP operated strict rules. Thus, the single did not get here in the event that he has already descended on the charts. These rules were abolished in the mid-1990s - due to the changing nature of the British charts ( "klaymbery" in the charts have become rare: usually single debuted at the highest position and then lowered).
In November 2003, TOTP has undergone the most radical change in its history: here were included singles, not yet included in the charts, as well as interviews with musicians. However, a year later, after the number of the audience of the program fell below three million, it was moved to BBC 2. July 30, 2006 Top of the Pops was broadcast last time it led Edith Bowman.
