VLADIMIR MAYAKOVSKY (1893-1930) was a Russian Soviet poet, playwright, artist, and actor.
During his pre-Revolution period leading into 1917, Mayakovsky became renowned as a prominent figure of the Russian Futurist movement, being among the signers of the Futurist manifesto, "A Slap in the Face of Public Taste" (1913). His early poetry was characterized by a rejection of traditional elements in favor of formal experimentation and welcomed social change. His support of the Bolsheviks in 1917 was reflected in the popular poems "Ode to Revolution" (1918) and "Left March" (1919), and the play "Mystery-Bouffe" (1921).
Though his work regularly demonstrated ideological support for the ideology of the Communist Party and a strong admiration of Lenin, his relationship with the Soviet state was complex and often tumultuous. He found himself engaged in confrontation with increasing cultural censorship and the development of the state doctrine of socialist realism. In his last three years he completed two satirical plays: "The Bedbug" (1929), lampooning the type of philistine that emerged with the New Economic Policy in the Soviet Union, and "The Bathhouse" (1930), a satire of bureaucratic stupidity and opportunism under Stalin. Both were met with scorn by the Soviet state and literary establishment.
During his lifetime, Mayakovsky was the most dynamic figure of the Soviet literary scene. His predominantly lyrical poems and his technical innovations influenced a number of Soviet poets, and outside Russia his impress was strong, especially in the 1930s, after Stalin posthumously declared him the "best and most talented poet of our Soviet epoch."
