Cresciuto nei vicoli oscuri e dimenticati di Londonium al seguito di una scapestrata banda, inconsapevole del suo lignaggio, il giovane Arthur (Charlie Hunnam) estrae la spada leggendaria dalla roccia in cui è incastonata, diventando così il legittimo proprietario di Excalibur, nonché il sovrano predestinato del regno. Nel percorso per imparare a padroneggiare il potere della magica lama e rivendicare il trono usurpato, si invaghisce di una misteriosa ragazza di nome Guinevere (l'attrice e modella spagnola Astrid Berges-Frisbey) e si unisce alla Resistenza nella lotta al tiranno Vortigern (Jude Law), che si è impadronito della sua corona ed ha assassinato i suoi genitori. Lo spietato signore della guerra non è l'unico avversario che Arthur deve affrontare, prima ancora dovrà sconfiggere i propri demoni interiori e riuscire a unire il popolo sotto la sua guida, se vuole esaudire le leggende del passato e diventare egli stesso immortale.
