Il film comincia con l'anziano Brushy Bill Roberts che racconta la sua storia ad un giovane giornalista. Roberts dichiara all'intervistatore di essere il famoso fuorilegge William H. Bonney, alias di Billy the Kid, che si credeva fosse stato ucciso da Patrick Floyd Garrett nel 1881. L'uomo racconta una convincente storia su come lui e Garrett, insieme a Arkansas Dave Rudabaugh, Chavez y Chavez, Doc Skurlock, e pochi altri, furono a lungo ricercati come criminali. Garrett, un amico di Billy, fu corrotto da John Chisum, un ricco allevatore di bestiame, per eliminare Billy. Quindi Garrett e Ashmun si imbarcarono in un lungo viaggio per trovare il famigerato Billy the Kid. La trama del film segue la vita di William H.
