Su una storia tremendamente sentimentale, tratta dall'omonimo romanzo di Peter B. Kyne, che era già stata raccontata quattro volte all'epoca del muto (la terza delle quali, 1920, con la regia dello stesso J. Ford) e una quinta volta nel 1936, Ford ha costruito un film nel quale s'intrecciano le parabole del Natale e del Figliol Prodigo, con vari risvolti umoristici che alleggeriscono il suo pesante simbolismo religioso.
