Roslyn (Monroe) è a Reno per divorziare. Perce (Clift), Guido (Wallach) e Gay (Gable) invece a Reno ci vivono, catturando cavalli selvaggi e partecipando a rodei. Tutti e tre sono attratti dalla bella Roslyn. Durante una caccia ai mustang, Perce si fa male e Roslyn ne è sconvolta: quel mondo duro e violento le fa vedere sotto un diverso aspetto Gay. Così quando Guido e Gay partecipano ad una nuova caccia a un branco di cavalli selvaggi, aiutata da Perce, la donna libera l'animale che i due hanno con tanta fatica catturato. Gay allora lo ricattura, per liberarlo però a sua volta, in omaggio a Roslyn. Un film "maledetto": dei suoi protagonisti tutti i principali morirono in breve tempo. E su tutto il film si sente quasi gravare il presentimento della morte e della dissoluzione, anche se il film vale per i grandi confronti tra gli attori e per il senso hustoniano dello spazio che per lo script piuttosto pesante di Arthur Miller. .: Cover :.
