Jacob ha sedici anni, una madre distratta e un padre pragmatico. Timido e impacciato è cresciuto col nonno, Abraham Portman, sfuggito alle persecuzioni naziste e riparato in un orfanotrofio diretto da Miss Peregrine. Di quell'infanzia, spesa in un'isola a largo del Galles, Abraham racconta meraviglie incantando Jacob e cogliendone la natura peculiare. Perché Jacob, proprio come suo nonno, è un ragazzino speciale che scoprirà la sua vocazione in circostanze drammatiche. Alla morte del nonno, ucciso dal suo peggiore incubo, Jacob decide di lasciare la Florida per il Galles, alla ricerca di qualcosa che possa spiegare le sue ultime volontà. Spiaggiato sull'isola, scopre molto presto che Miss Peregrine non era un'invenzione di una mente senile ma una giovane donna che accudisce ragazzi con doni speciali.
