ALFRED DÖBLIN (1878-1957) was a German novelist and essayist best known for his canonical novel BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ (1929). His engagement with such key movements of the European avant-garde as futurism, expressionism, dadaism, and Neue Sachlichkeit led critic Sabina Becker to call him "perhaps the most significant representative of literary modernism in Berlin."
Although Döblin’s technique and style vary, the urge to expose the hollowness of a civilization heading toward its own destruction and a quasi-religious urge to provide a means of salvation for suffering humanity were two of his constant preoccupations. His offbeat short stories stirred the avant-garde but among the public at large he first made his mark as a novelist. THE THREE LEAPS OF WANG LUN (1916) is an epic historical novel chronicling upheaval and revolution in 18th-century China, and was favorably received by critics, who praised its detailed and exotic depictions of China. It won two prestigious literary prizes and was acknowledged by Bertolt Brecht and later by Günter Grass as a significant influence on their work.
BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ (1929) -- here presented in two translations -- is generally considered Döblin's masterpiece and one of the most important works of the Weimar Republic. Its innovative use of literary montage as well as its panoramic portrayal of the modern metropolis ("Großstadtroman") cemented its place among the key works of literary modernism. The novel earned Döblin global recognition and literary celebrity, who was soon forced into exile by the rise of the Nazi dictatorship.
NOVEMBER 1918 is an epic trilogy about the German Revolution of 1918-1919, comprised of A PEOPLE BETRAYED (1948-49, containing the first two parts) and KARL AND ROSA (1950). It is the most significant work from Döblin's period of exile and represents the culmination of his work in the genre of the historical novel.
