DESCRIPTION
This version of Dracula is closely based on Bram Stoker's classic novel of the same name. A young lawyer (Jonathan Harker) is assigned to a gloomy village in the mists of eastern Europe. He is captured and imprisoned by the undead vampire Dracula, who travels to London, inspired by a photograph of Harker's betrothed, Mina Murray. In Britain, Dracula begins a reign of seduction and terror, draining the life from Mina's closest friend, Lucy Westenra. Lucy's friends gather together to try to drive Dracula away.

Nel 1462 le armate del principe transilvano Vlad (Oldman) sconfiggono i musulmani. La moglie Elisabetta viene spinta al suicidio da un falso messaggio che le annuncia la morte dello sposo. Disperato, Vlad si vota per sempre al Male, diventando l'immortale Dracula. Quattro secoli dopo riceve nel suo castello il giovane Jonathan Harker (Reeves), fidanzato con la diafana Mina (Ryder) le cui sembianze sono identiche a quelle di Elisabetta. Il vampiro decide così di cercare Mina a Londra...
Coppola compie sul testo originale un lavoro di rilettura che, mantenendo inalterata la forma, ne esaspera il contenuto. Grande interpretazione di Gary Oldman. Oscar per i costumi (Eiko Ishioka), gli effetti speciali sonori e il trucco. Colonna sonora con le voci di Diamanda Galas e Annie Lennox. In parti minori Tom Waits e Monica Bellucci.
