La serie parla della giovane Maria Stuarda e le sue dame di compagnia, il fidanzamento fra Mary e Francesco viene formalizzato per rafforzare l'alleanza politico/militare tra Francia e Scozia. Ma la partita non è conclusa. I problemi si confondono fra politica, religione e affari di cuore. Il Principe Francesco è attratto dalla determinata e carismatica Mary, ma come la maggior parte dei giovani, è restio all'idea di sistemarsi in matrimonio, soprattutto avendo già in corso una relazione sentimentale con una dama di corte. E il suo punto di vista sull'importanza e l'utilità di una alleanza con la Scozia cambia. Eppure, un legame tra Mary e Francesco si accende. A complicare ulteriormente le cose è la presenza di Bash, il giovane e affascinante fratellastro di Francesco. Nonostante la sua nascita illegittima, Bash è il preferito di suo padre, il Re.
