Episode: The Choice (1x1)
Episode Plot:
Historian Starkey assesses the position of Winston Churchill during his political wilderness days of the early 1930s,when he was writing a biography of his ancestor,John Churchill, the future Duke of Marlborough. John had been a trusted general at the court of James II,with whose daughter Anne,John's wife Sarah was a great friend but, fearing that the Catholic James would tyrannise the largely Protestant England had helped William of Orange, husband to Anne's sister Mary,to invade the country and depose the king. Just as Churchill was a lone British voice against the atrocities of Hitler in Europe Starkey sees John Churchill as being only too aware of the expansionist plans of the French monarch Louis XIV and draws a comparison between the two Churchills.

SERIES INFO
Genre:
Stars: David Starkey
Series Plot: Dr David Starkey tells the story of the two greatest war leaders in British history, both of whom were called Churchill.
Everyone knows Winston Churchill led Britain and her Allies in their struggle against Hitler- less well known is John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, who led Britain and her Allies against an earlier would-be dictator of Europe, Louis XIV of France. John Churchill was Winston's ancestor, his inspiration and his subject.
Before he was Prime Minister, Winston Churchill wrote a million-word biography of John Churchill. Starkey argues that the ten years Winston spent working on it turned him from a politician into a statesman-prophet, and prepared him for the immense task of leading the nation against Nazi Germany.
Episode plot: The first episode in the series tells the story of how Winston Churchill came to write Marlborough, his million-word biography of his ancestor John Churchill.
The first volume describes how John rose from obscurity to be the right-hand man of King James II.
But in the crisis of 1688 John chose political principles over personal loyalty and betrayed James in the so-called Glorious Revolution that set Britain on the course to democracy, and committed her to war with the rising hegemonic power of Louis XIV's France.
Dr David Starkey argues that it was Winston's absorption in the 17th century that helped him to be the first to recognise the menace of a new European hegemony, warning Parliament about the Nazis before Hitler had even come to power.
