Jonas Taylor è un esperto in missioni di salvataggio a profondità marine estreme, ma dopo aver dovuto sacrificare alcuni uomini ha deciso di ritirarsi. Presso l'avveniristica stazione Mana One viene scoperto, al largo della costa cinese, un territorio ancora più profondo della Fossa delle Marianne, ma gli esploratori finiscono intrappolati sul fondale, così Taylor decide di tornare in azione, visto che una delle persone da salvare è la sua ex moglie. Qui si ritroverà faccia a faccia con un megalodonte, un antenato preistorico degli squali di enormi dimensioni, che credeva di aver già incontrato in passato. La mastodontica creatura finirà per emergere dalle profondità e minacciare l'intera stazione oltre alle imbarcazioni e i bagnanti della zona. Solo Taylor e la squadra di Mana One, tra cui la biologa ittica Suyin Zhang, possono fermarlo.
