Following her aunt's death, Colleen and her daughters inherit her house. However, during their first night in their new home, murderers enter the home, putting Colleen in a situation where she must fight to save her daughters' lives. When the girls suffer a terrible trauma during the night, their disparate personalities diverge even further. The younger daughter, Beth, is said to become a famous horror author with a perfect family and life in Los Angeles, while her sister, Vera, can't cope, and loses her mind faced to an unshakable sense of paranoia. Sixteen years later the daughters and mother reunite at the house where Colleen and Vera continue to reside, it is then that strange events begin to take place.
Beth è una ragazza con la passione per Lovecraft e i racconti dell'orrore, che ama anche scrivere. La sorella maggiore Vera non apprezza molto queste sue inclinazioni, mentre la mamma la incoraggia. I tre si trasferiscono nella isolata e spettrale casa della defunta zia Clarissa ("Sembra la casa di Rob Zombie" commenta Vera, che non apprezza). Nella casa ci sono parecchie bambole, di cui l'anziana signora faceva collezione. Beth, turbata, ha le sue prime mestruazioni, mentre Vera è insofferente delle attenzioni che la mamma riserva alla sorella. Un furgone dei gelati li ha però seguiti.
Un uomo corpulento e violento ne è sceso: entra in casa, aggredisce la mamma e cattura le ragazze sotto lo sguardo d'assenso di una sua complice. Beth, atterrita e incapace di reagire, vede la mamma lottare ferocemente contro gli aggressori.
La madre implora Beth affinché fugga. Beth si risveglia urlando: sono passati anni ed è un'affermata scrittrice horror, ma gli incubi la tormentano ancora. Mentre è a casa con suo marito e il figlio, Beth riceve una telefonata accorata dalla sorella Vera - ormai mentalmente instabile - che le chiede di tornare. Tornare nella vecchia casa della zia Clarissa dove Vera vive ancora con la madre, nonostante tutto quello che di terribile è successo. Beth torna, ma la casa ha ancora i suoi terribili segreti.
