Keda, figlio di Tau, sta attraversando i riti di formazione per entrare nella squadra di cacciatori e procacciatori guidata dal padre. Se ha un talento innato per aguzzare le pietre, e quindi una buona intelligenza e coordinazione mano-occhio, Keda è però meno brutale di quello che richiede il mondo preistorico dove vive, tanto da non riuscire a uccidere una bestia già ferita e inerme. Le cose per lui si mettono male durante una sorta di caccia al bufalo, in cui finisce caricato da un animale e sbalzato giù da un crepaccio. Il suo corpo si ferma su una sporgenza nella roccia, irraggiungibile agli altri uomini, e tutto fa pensare che sia morto, così dopo qualche giorno la tribù è costretta ad abbandonarlo. Quando finalmente si riprenderà finirà presto trascinato via dall'acqua e dovrà difendersi da alcuni lupi. Con il loro capobranco ferito inizierà una sorta di rapporto di amicizia, destinato ad approfondirsi nel corso del lungo viaggio verso casa.
