Neil Armstrong, ingegnere aereonautico e aviatore americano, conduce una vita bucolica e ritirata con la famiglia a cui ha 'promesso' la luna. La morte prematura della sua bambina lo spinge a partecipare al programma Gemini, il secondo programma di volo umano intrapreso dagli Stati Uniti il cui scopo era sviluppare le tecniche necessarie ad affrontare viaggi spaziali avanzati e successivamente impiegati nella missione Apollo. Selezionato e assoldato come comandante della missione Gemini 8, Neil è il primo civile a volare nello spazio ma sulla Terra le ripercussioni sono fatali. Tra incidenti tecnici e lutti in decollo e in atterraggio, tra la guerra in Vietnam e le tensioni sociali del '68, tra due figli da crescere e una moglie da ritrovare, Armstrong bucherà il silenzio del cosmo prendendosi la Luna.
