In seguito, Irving riesce a vendere i diritti all'editore McGraw-Hill ma viene condannato a due anni e mezzo di prigione. Era il 1972. Perche? Irving aveva convinto il suo editore, e, in fondo, anche se stesso, di conoscere personalmente Howard Hughes, il quale da anni non si faceva vedere in pubblico. Lo scrittore, frustrato e deluso, a cui era sempre mancata la grande idea o la grande occasione per arrivare al successo, aveva falsificato i documenti in modo tale che risultasse un rapporto effettivo con il miliardario.
