La serie è ambientata quasi esclusivamente nella cittadina del Maine che le dà il titolo, la trama si sviluppa su più livelli temporali. Si comincia appunto nel 1991 con il ritrovamento da parte dello sceriffo Alan Pangborn (Scott Glenn) di un bambino di colore di nome Henry Matthew Deaver, ma ben presto ci si sposta al 2018, con il suicidio del direttore di un carcere.
La seconda stagione racconta le origini dell’infermiera Annie Wilkes (la stessa di Misery, per intenderci, qui interpretata da Lizzy Caplan). Ovviamente ci sono alche altri personaggi estrapolati dall’universo letterario di Stephen King, e anche vari luoghi come la Casa Marsten de Le notti di Salem, la cittadina di Jerusalem’s Lot e la prigione di Shawshank...
