Gance aveva girato tre scene che andavano proiettate simultaneamente su tre schermi posti a fianco l'uno dell'altro. La scena centrale doveva rappresentare la prosa, quelle laterali la poesia e tutte insieme il cinema. Delle tre scene: il dibattito alla Convenzione, il "Ballo delle vittime" e la marcia verso l'Italia, rimase solo quest'ultima. Il regista aveva progettato di girare la vita di Napoleone in sei parti, ma per una serie di vicessitudini riuscì a girare solo questa. Il tema, tuttavia restò una costante della sua vita, per cui nel 1960 girò "NAPOLEONE AD AUSTERLITZ" e nel 1928 aveva realizzato anche "AUTOUR DE NAPOLEON" che è la registrazione delle riprese di "Napoléon" fatta dalla troupe del film, cioè un"backstage ante litteram".
