La città di Nome, in Alaska, è diventata famosa nel 1925 per essere la destinazione dell'evento chiamato Great Race of Mercy, in cui i cani da slitta hanno avuto un ruolo determinante trasportando l'antitossina necessaria a curare i casi di difterite che si erano verificati in città, nonostante delle durissime condizioni meteo.
