The Lost Canvas (Il dipinto perduto) narra la storia della Guerra Sacra avvenuta nel diciottesimo secolo (243 anni prima della serie originale) ed è incentrata sul rapporto tra Aron e Tenma, due ragazzi che, un tempo teneri amici, sono destinati a combattere in due diverse fazioni:
quella di Ade e quella di Atena. Aron, infatti, è stato prescelto da Ade come corpo ospite, mentre Tenma è la reincarnazione del Cavaliere di Pegaso che ferì il dio degl'inferi all'epoca dei miti e che da sempre combatte a fianco di Atena, la cui reincarnazione è la sorella stessa di Aron, nonché amica di Tenma, Sasha.
