DESCRIPTION
Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper are both brilliant physicists working at Cal Tech in Pasadena, California. They are colleagues, best friends, and roommates, although in all capacities their relationship is always tested primarily by Sheldon's regimented, deeply eccentric, and non-conventional ways. They are also friends with their Cal Tech colleagues mechanical engineer Howard Wolowitz and astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali. The foursome spend their time working on their individual work projects, playing video games, watching science-fiction movies, or reading comic books. As they are self-professed nerds, all have little or no luck with women. When Penny, a pretty woman and an aspiring actress from Omaha, moves into the apartment across the hall from Leonard and Sheldon's, Leonard has another aspiration in life, namely to get Penny to be his girlfriend.

De show gaat over vier vrienden: Leonard Hofstadter, Sheldon Cooper, Howard Wolowitz en Rajesh Koothrappali, die allemaal werken voor Caltech. Leonard, Sheldon en Rajesh zijn gepromoveerd en hebben een PhD in een natuurwetenschappelijke richting, Howard is een ingenieur met een masterdiploma. Het zijn alle vier echte geeks: bollebozen met een voorliefde voor wiskunde en fysica, ze spreken verschillende talen (zoals Klingon) en hebben allemaal een hoog IQ. In hun vrije tijd spelen ze vooral computerspelletjes, lezen ze stripverhalen en kijken ze graag naar sciencefictionfilms en/of -series.
Leonard en Sheldon delen een appartement. Op een dag krijgen de twee een nieuwe overbuur: Penny. Penny is een (in haar woorden) tijdelijke serveerster in 'The Cheesecake Factory' met acteerambities. Ze is niet zo slim als de jongens, maar heeft wel meer sociale vaardigheden. Penny komt uit Omaha (Nebraska) en is naar Los Angeles gekomen om het te maken in de showbizz. Leonard is onmiddellijk verliefd op Penny, maar zijn vrienden plagen hem daarmee, omdat Penny volgens hen ver buiten zijn bereik ligt. Maar toch klikt het af en toe tussen hen beiden.
