DESCRIPTION
Harper's autobiographical novel is almost out, his girlfriend Robin desires commitment, and he's best man at the wedding of Lance, a pro athlete. He goes to New York early (Robin will come for the wedding) to hang out with Lance and other friends, including Jordan, his former almost-lover, now in media and privy to an advance copy of the book. The men discuss women, never facing their own double standard; Jordan wants to try again with Harper, at least for one night; and Harper fears that Lance will read his book and learn that the bride-to-be slept with him once to avenge Lance's many affairs. Can Harper mature before Lance kills him, Jordan seduces him, and he loses Robin?

Synopis:
Intellectual William Russell and down-to-earth Joe Cantwell are front runners for a party nomination that will almost certainly mean the Presidency. Cantwell is prepared to use anything to achieve his goal while Russell sees himself as a man of principle - though his philandering means he is relieved his wife is prepared to appear alongside him. Both men crucially need the support of the ailing President, and as the stakes become higher each team has to decide how dirty they are prepared to get.

Durante a convenção de um partido, cinco candidatos disputam o direito de serem indicados para concorrer à presidência. A disputa se concentra entre dois candidatos: William Russell (Henry Fonda), Secretário de Estado, e Joe Cantwell (Cliff Robertson), senador. Enquanto o primeiro é um intelectual, o segundo é bem realista. Cantwell está preparado para usar qualquer coisa para atingir seu objetivo, enquanto Russell vê a si mesmo como um homem de princípios, apesar de ter tido amantes. Mas este problema foi solucionado e Alice (Margaret Leighton), sua esposa, concorda em aparecer ao seu lado, afastando os boatos de um possível divórcio. Ambos os homens precisam do apoio do presidente, Art Hockstader (Lee Tracy), para atingir a maioria, sendo que provavelmente Art não estará vivo para entregar o cargo, pois está morrendo de câncer. Cantwell pretende transformar um colapso nervoso que Russell teve para passar a idéia de que ele é louco e Russell tem a chance de revidar, pois existem informações que nos anos 40 Cantwell teve relações homossexuais. A idéia de soltar esta notícia não agrada Russell e o deixa dividido, pois usar a vida pessoal é contra seus princípios. Mas o presidente, que formalmente não apoiou ninguém mas assessora Russell, e Dick Jensen (Kevin McCarthy), o coordenador de campanha, acham que este trunfo não deve ser desprezado.
