Nesta aventura desenfreada e anárquica que se desenrola no México do século XIX, o mercenário americano Hogan (Clint Eastwood) salva a freira Sara (Shirley MacLaine) dos seus pretensos molestadores. Mais tarde, percebe que este encontro casual foi um golpe de sorte, uma vez que a freira possui muitas informações acerca dos oficiais da guarnição que ele planeja atacar.
