Serial Experiments Lain is an anime series directed by Ryutaro Nakamura,
original character design by Yoshitoshi ABe, screenplay written by Chiaki J. Konaka,
and produced by Yasuyuki Ueda (credited as production 2nd) for Triangle Staff.
It was broadcast on TV Tokyo from July to September 1998.
A PlayStation game with the same title was released in November 1998 by Pioneer LDC.
Lain is influenced by philosophical subjects such as reality, identity, and communication.
The series focuses on Lain Iwakura, an adolescent girl living in suburban Japan, and her
introduction to the Wired, a global communications network similar to the Internet.
Lain lives with her middle class family, which consists of her inexpressive older sister Mika,
her cold mother, and her computer-obsessed father.
The first ripple on the pond of Lain's lonely life appears when she learns that girls from
her school have received an e-mail from Chisa Yomoda, a schoolmate who committed suicide.
When Lain receives the message at home, Chisa tells her (in real time) that she is not dead,
but has just "abandoned the flesh", and has found God in the Wired. From then on, Lain is bound
to a quest which will take her ever deeper into both the network and her own thoughts.
The anime series is licensed in North America by Geneon (previously Pioneer Entertainment) on DVD,
VHS and LaserDisc. It was also released in Singapore by Odex. The video game, which shares only
the themes and protagonist with the series, was never released outside Japan.
The series shows influences from topics such as philosophy, computer history, cyberpunk literature
and conspiracy theory, and it was made the subject of several academic articles.
English language anime reviewers found it to be "weird" and unusual, with generally
positive reviews. Producer Ueda said he intended Japanese and American audiences to form
conflicting views on the series, but was disappointed in this regard, as the impressions
turned out to be similar.

diretto da Ryutaro Nakamura e scritto da Chiaki J. Konaka.
La trama è incentrata sulla vita di Lain e le sue scoperte sul confine
tra la realtà e il mondo virtuale di una futuristica Internet chimata Wired.
L'edizione italiana è stata curata da Dynamic Italia e Dynit in 4 VHS e
4 DVD usciti fra il 2000 ed il 2003.
L'anime è stato anche (nel 1998 ) trasposto in un videogioco per PlayStation
e sono stati pubblicati diversi artbook.
Il modo corretto di scrivere il nome di questo anime è tutto minuscolo: serial experiments lain.
Trama
Dopo il suicidio della giovane Chisa Yomoda, alcune ragazze ricevono delle e-mail dalla ragazza.
Il sospetto è che si tratti di uno scherzo di cattivo gusto, ma una di loro,
Lain Iwakura ne rimane particolarmente incuriosita.
Dopo aver chiesto al padre un nuovo NAVI (l'evoluzione del PC - l'acronimo si basa
sul concetto di Knowledge Navigator) inizia a navigare nel Wired
(una rete di computer simile ad Internet) in cerca di risposte.
Da qui in poi una serie di eventi inspiegabili sconvolge la sua vita.
Viene a sapere che un'altra Lain, del tutto simile a lei fisicamente ma caratterialmente
opposta, ha fatto la sua apparizione sia nel Wired che nel mondo reale e che i Knights
(cavalieri - un gruppo di hacker) sono particolarmente interessati a lei. Sembra infatti
che Lain abbia da sempre una controparte nella rete, nata con la rete stessa.
Nella ricerca della verità Lain scopre di non avere passato, che i suoi genitori non sono
altro che attori e che il suo vero io è quello virtuale.
Attraverso il chip Psyche, Lain entra in contatto con il creatore della struttura del Wired,
che dopo aver scaricato la sua coscienza nella rete informatica se ne è autoproclamato Dio;
spinta dalle sue richieste, Lain inizia a far si che la realtà reale e il Wired collidano e
si fondano, connettendo tutti gli esseri umani del pianeta terra senza l'ausilio di periferiche
attraverso il Protocollo 7 del Wired, che sfrutta la risonanza Schumann. Ma durante il processo
si accorge, grazie alla sua unica amica umana Arisu, che la realtà e il Wired devono rimanere
separati se non vuole provocare solo altro dolore.
Prende quindi la decisione di resettare il sistema riportando il mondo allo stato precedente
alla morte di Chisa e cancellando sé stessa dalla memoria degli esseri umani
per estirpare completamente l'anomalia.
Nota: il titolo del primo episodio è probabilmente un gioco di parole tra weird (strano, bizzarro) e wired (collegato), che si leggono in modo simile, oltre a essere anagrammi.
