La storia è ambientata in uno dei quartieri più malfamati della New York 1980, il Bronx, dove la criminalità domina incontrastata, anche per l'incuria, l'inettitudine e la corruzione di non pochi responsabili dell'ordine pubblico. Eddie Marino, un meccanico ex-poliziotto, rientrando dal lavoro trova orrendamente ucciso il figlioletto, e la moglie fisicamente seviziata e moralmente distrutta. Straziato, Eddie ricorre alla giustizia, ma fuori di sé per l'inefficace difesa di un avvocato privo di grinta e per l'ingiusto verdetto di un giudice corrotto, ha una reazione violenta in tribunale e viene condannato per oltraggio a pubblico ufficiale. Scontati alcuni mesi di prigione nella promiscuità più avvilente con delinquenti della peggior risma, esce dal carcere e - con l'aiuto di un pugno di amici ex poliziotti, buttati fuori dai quadri non si sa perchè - si fa giustizia da sé, uccidendo ferocemente tutti i responsabili, non escluso il magistrato.
