Shaft è un film originale Netflix diretto da Tim Story ed è il quinto capitolo della saga dedicata all'omonimo poliziotto fuori dalle righe e dai metodi decisamente poco ortodossi. Sono passati 25 anni da quando John Shaft (Samuel L. Jackson) ha lasciato la sua famiglia per evitare che la moglie Maya (Regina Hall) e figlio appena nato J.J. fossero presi di mira dai suoi innumerevoli nemici. Sebbene a distanza, Shaft ha cercato di essere presente nella vita di J.J. (Jessie T. Usher) anche se a suo modo, soprattutto inviandogli regali fuori luogo ad ogni compleanno. Un giorno il ragazzo, che ha pressoché seguito le orme del padre diventando un informatico dell'MIT, bussa alla sua porta per affidargli una missione: il suo migliore amico Karim (Avan Jogia), ex tossico dipendente, è stato trovato morto per overdose, ma J.J. è certo che qualcuno lo abbia incastrato e in realtà si tratti di omicidio.
