DESCRIPTION
In the summer of 1975 in a neighborhood in Boston, 3 kids, Dave Boyle and two of his friends, Jimmy and Sean, are playing on the sidewalk when Dave gets abducted by two men and endures several days of sexual abuse. Eventually, Dave escapes traumatized throughout adulthood. Jimmy is an ex-con and a father of three, whose daughter Katie, is found dead and Dave becomes the number one suspect. Sean is a homicide detective, investigating Katie's murder, ends up finding himself faced with past and present demons as more is uncovered about Katie's murder. Learning Katie had a boyfriend, ballistics later turn up a gun belonging to the father, which then puts her boyfriend as the suspect. Will Sean find out who killed Katie? Will Jimmy make it through the investigation? And will Dave ever find out what really happened when he was abducted?

Nel 1975 Sean, Jimmy e Dave sono tre ragazzini inseparabili che trascorrono il tempo giocando per le strade di Boston.
Un giorno, i tre incidono i loro nomi sul cemento fresco e vengono rimproverati da un poliziotto a bordo della sua volante. L’uomo, accompagnato da un sacerdote, intima a Dave di salire in macchina così da poterlo riaccompagnare a casa.
Dave scompare per quattro giorni e al suo ritorno non rivela a nessuno cosa è accaduto, allontanandosi dai suoi amici.
Venticinque anni più tardi Katie, la figlia di Jimmy (Sean Penn), viene uccisa selvaggiamente. Sean (Kevin Bacon), divenuto poliziotto, è incaricato di indagare sul caso insieme al collega Whitey Powers (Laurence Fishburne).
La sera dell’omicidio Dave (Tim Robbins), che abita ancora nel vecchio quartiere come Jimmy, rientra a casa ferito e coperto di sangue, confessando alla moglie Celeste (Marcia Gay Harden) di essere stato colpito da un rapinatore.
La donna, inizlamente, crede alla versione di Dave ma quando il suo atteggiamento diventa sempre più sospetto, si confida con Jimmy e gli rivela i suoi dubbi. Nel frattempo, l’unico sospettato per l’omicidio di Katie è il fidanzato Brendan (Tom Guiry), con il quale la ragazza progettava di fuggire a Las Vegas.
Nonostante Jimmy insista per accusare il ragazzo, Brendan viene scagionato dopo essersi sottoposto alla macchina della verità. Jimmy si convince che l’amico d’infanzia sia il colpevole della morte di sua figlia e, dopo averlo fatto ubriacare, lo costringe a confessare.
Dave si professa del tutto estraneo ai fatti e racconta a Jimmy cosa accadde nel giorno della sua sparizione nel 1975. Sean, invece, continua a sospettare di Brendan e continua le sue indagini…
