La nave sepolta, il film diretto da Simon Stone, è ambientato in Inghilterra nel 1938, alle soglie della Seconda guerra mondiale. Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan), ricca vedova del colonnello dell'esercito Franck, possiede un terreno nel Suffolk a Sutton Hoo, vicino la città di Woodbridge, su un promontorio situato sopra il fiume Deben. La donna è convinta che sepolti sotto la sua proprietà ci siano antichi tesori. Decide così di chiamare l'archeologo dilettante Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes), un esperto di storia e astronomia con una vera e propria passione per l'Europa medievale.
I due danno il via alle ricerche senza sapere che di lì a poco s'imbatteranno in un'importante e sorprendente scoperta: porteranno alla luce una nave-tomba dal grande valore storico. Mentre il paese si prepara alla guerra, la Signora Pretty e il Signor Brown dovranno affrontare le più importanti autorità museali che attirate dall'incredibile notizia, si faranno avanti con assurde pretese.
