Abraham's young friend and his family can't even complain about the constant abuse and torture at the hands of this tyrant, because...

if they complain to the authorities they risk being accused of being escaped slaves - even though this family was born free,

and in accordance with the laws of the day if you're born free, then you can't be enslaved, but it would be their word against a rich white man who trade in slaves, as well as other produce.
