Therion доселе не имеет аналогов мире – как по музыкальным стилистическим показателям, так и по своему неожиданному пути развития. Шведская команда, прославившаяся (впрочем, в определённых кругах), исполняя высококачественный, но тем не менее ничем особо не примечательный скандинавский death metal, в 1996 году внезапно для всех выпускает в свет альбом Theli, который дарит безвозмездно тьму популярности участникам коллектива и становится каноном symphonic metal'a. При этом для таких кардинальных перемен не существовало сколько-нибудь весомых предпосылок – взять хотя бы предыдущий релиз "Lepaca Kliffoth". Красивый и элегантный дэт, разнообразный и разукрашенный некоторыми вкусностями – например, совсем не по ДЭТски выполненным опусом "Beauty In Black" с оперным вокалом. Копая вглубь мы найдём ещё немало моментов, которые получили своё развитие в дальнейшем на последующих альбомах, но это особой роли в данном контексте не играет. Некоторые композиции для релиза 1996 года были написаны за несколько лет до его создания, другие же элементы, как признаётся сам Кристофер Йонссен, были "выкрадены" из побочного проекта Theli, от которого, собственно, и пошло название диска.
