Trama:
Ventiduesimo secolo. Due androidi, Madre e Padre, vengono inviati su un nuovo pianeta, Kepler-22b, per provare a colonizzarlo, o quantomeno per capire se può essere reso abitabile per la specie umana. Il motivo è presto detto: la Terra è devastata dalla guerra tra due fazioni contrapposte, da una parte gli atei militanti, dall'altra i seguaci di un ordine religioso di derivazione cristiana che si basa sul culto di Sol, i mitraici.
Con loro, Madre e Padre hanno degli embrioni che, una volta sviluppati, saranno la speranza di una nuova umanità. Dodici anni dopo l'arrivo su Kepler-22b, però, è sopravvissuto solo un ragazzino, Campion, e le prospettive della colonia appaiono a dir poco cupe. Ma Campion e i suoi "genitori" non sono gli unici a essersi rifugiati in quella parte dell'universo. Come se non bastasse, l'arrivo di alcuni sopravvissuti mitraici complica ulteriormente le cose. Mentre la colonia umana rischia di essere distrutta a causa delle differenze religiose che l'attraversano, gli androidi si rendono conto che controllare le credenze dei loro creatori è un compito a dir poco arduo e insidioso.
