DESCRIPTION
Sad story of a waif, Gelsomina, who is sold by her mother to Zampano for 10,000 lire and a few kilos of food. Zampano is a traveling showman who exhibits feats of strength by breaking a chain wrapped around his chest. He performs in village squares and then passes the hat for whatever the normally small crowd is prepared to give. He teaches Gelsomina a drum roll as part of his introduction. He doesn't treat her well and when she tries to run away, he beats her. They eventually join a small traveling circus where they meet a tight-rope walker who convinces Gelsomina to question her choices.

Gelsomina, una povera ragazza di paese, viene affidata a Zampanò, uno zingaro girovago. Lei è sensibile e sempre tesa a scoprire i misteriosi segreti della natura e delle cose. Lui, opaco e massiccio, terrestre e animalesco, si accorge appena di quello che vede e tocca. Fra i due, naturalmente, non è possibile nessuna comunione e Gelsomina ne soffre tanto da voler andar via. Ma un altro girovago, un funambolo chiamato "Il Matto", la convince anche del misterioso segreto della sua missione vicino a Zampanò. Tutto serve e tutti gli uomini servono a qualcosa - le dice il Matto - e lei "serve" restando vicino a Zampanò. Gelsomina capisce e rimane, ma un giorno Zampanò, che non era mai andato d'accordo con il Matto, viene alle mani con lui e, quasi senza volerlo, lo uccide. Gelsomina impazzisce dal dolore, perché il Matto, in un certo senso, era stato per lei la chiave di tutti quei misteriosi segreti che, prima di conoscerlo, essa aveva solo intuito nella natura. Di fronte a quella pazzia, Zampanò resta di sasso e non sa cosa fare. Il giorno, però, in cui si accorge che le frasi dissennate di Gelsomina sulla morte del Matto potrebbero condurlo in prigione, si decide ad abbandonare la donna mentre dorme. Qualche anno più tardi, all'improvviso, gli dicono che è morta e di fronte a quella morte Zampanò ha di colpo la rivelazione del significato di quella vita: l'animale si trasforma in un uomo cosciente.
