Его рост превышал два метра, вес достигал 110 килограммов, а по своей значимости он не уступал двум другим "королям" жанра - Би Би Кингу и Фредди Кингу. Будучи левшой, Альберт держал гриф правой рукой, но при этом порядок струн оставался обычным, из-за чего музыкант играл как бы наоборот, что не помешало ему оказать влияние на множество других исполнителей. Кинг мастерски солировал на одной струне, а его излюбленным инструментом всегда оставалась футуристическая модель "Gibson Flying V", которую гигант ласково называл "Люси". Альберт Нельсон родился на берегах Миссисипи 25 апреля 1923 года. Его первые шаги в музыке были таковы: церковный хор, сделанная из сигарной коробки гитара и участие в госпел-группах типа "The Harmony Kings". По настоящему же будущий "король" понял свое призвание, когда услышал игру таких мастеров блюза, как Блайнд Легион Джефферсон, Лонни Джонсон, Роберт Найтхок и Элмор Джеймс. В 1959-м Кингу удалось обратить на себя внимание с песней "I'm A Lonely Man", но более широкое признание артист получил несколько позже, когда трек "Don't Throw Your Love On Me So Strong" достиг 14-й строчки ритм-энд-блюзовых чартов. Следом вышел первый диск-гигант "The Big Blues", однако большой блюз начался для Кинга только в 43 года. В 1966-м артист заключил сделку с мемфисской конторой "Stax Records" и атаковал рынок пластинками, записанными в сопровождении домашней стаксовской группы "Booker Т. & The MGs". Участие этого ансамбля придало музыке Кинга мягкий, душевный оттенок и таким образом он проник на территорию соул.
