О фильме: События происходят в ноябре 1943 года где-то на русском участке германского Восточного фронта. В готовящийся к отправке на передовую штрафной батальон вермахта 999, который сами немцы окрестили «командой вознесения», потому что, в отличие от штрафных частей Красной армии, здесь нельзя искупить вину кровью, и выход из этого проклятого батальона только один — в братскую могилу, прибывает очередное пополнение: четыре штрафника из самых разных слоёв общества. Показаны судьбы этих четырёх столь разных людей (Эрнст Дойчманн, талантливый молодой врач; Эрих Видек, тихий забитый крестьянин; Карл Шваннеке, уголовник-рецидивист (взломщик сейфов); Готтфрид фон Бартлиц, полковник вермахта), назначенных в один взвод... Фильм основан на одноимённом романе немецкого писателя Хайнца Гюнтера Конзалика.
