Quando nel 2001 lascia il penitenziario federale, dopo avere scontato una pena per frode finanziaria, riciclaggio e traffici illeciti, Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) è un uomo diverso. Non è più il signore e padrone di Wall Street, ha la barba mal rasata e i capelli in disordine. Nessuno lo sta aspettando, né la figlia Winnie, che non vuole più saperne di lui, né tantomeno qualcuno dei suoi colleghi di Wall Street. Dopo otto anni di carcere, Gekko è solo e completamente fuori dal mondo al quale apparteneva. Nel 2008 Jake Moore (Shia LaBeouf), giovane e abile intermediario finanziario, accumula milioni lavorando per la rispettabile Keller Zabel Investments, amministrata da Louis Zabel (Frank Langella), suo mentore e guida. La ragazza di Jake, Winnie (Carey Mulligan), sostenuta da un idealismo che manca al padre Gordon, è favorevole al proposito di Jake di investire in energie pulite. Quando iniziano a circolare insistentemente voci sulla Keller Zabel, che si troverebbe in difficoltà per avere investito miliardi in titoli tossici, il titolo in Borsa della società crolla rovinosamente. Quando la banca centrale rifiuta di aiutarlo, Bretton James (Josh Brolin), socio della potente banca d'investimenti Churchill Schwartz, si prepara ad acquisire la Keller Zabel a una frazione del suo valore. Durante una conferenza alla Fordham University Jake ha l'occasione di conoscere Gordon Gekko, che sta promuovendo il suo nuovo libro e, all'insaputa di Winnie, gli propone di aiutarlo a riavvicinarsi alla figlia, in cambio di informazioni sul perché Louis Zabel sia stato tradito dai suoi colleghi banchieri.[/spoiler]
