DESCRIPTION

A respected financial company is downsizing and one of the victims is the risk management division head, who was working on a major analysis just when he was let go. His protégé completes the study late into the night and then frantically calls his colleagues in about the company's financial disaster he has discovered. What follows is a long night of panicked double checking and double dealing as the senior management prepare to do whatever it takes to mitigate the debacle to come even as the handful of conscientious comrades find themselves dragged along into the unethical abyss.

Margin Call è un film drammatico del 2011 scritto e diretto da J. C. Chandor. La vicenda si svolge a Wall Street, nelle 24 ore antecedenti la drammatica crisi finanziaria del 2008. All’inizio di una giornata lavorativa come tante, una grande società di investimenti conduce un licenziamento di massa senza preavviso. I broker Seth Bregman (Penn Badgley) e Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto) osservano la maggior parte dei loro colleghi lasciare in fretta le postazioni di lavoro, mentre la società disabilita account di posta elettronica e cellulari aziendali. Tra loro c’è Eric Dale (Stanley Tucci), che lavora nella gestione dei rischi. Prima di andarsene, Dale consegna a Sullivan un'unità USB con un progetto su cui stava lavorando, dicendogli di “stare attento”. Quella notte, rimasto solo in ufficio, Sullivan inizia a studiare i dati di Dale e si rende conto che la società è sull'orlo del tracollo finanziario. Quindi avvisa il suo supervisore Will Emerson (Paul Bettany), che convoca immediatamente il capo junior Sam Rogers (Kevin Spacey). Durante la notte, viene indetta una riunione d’emergenza con altri dirigenti senior, tra cui il capo della divisione Jared Cohen (Simon Baker), il capo della gestione dei rischi Sarah Robertson (Demi Moore) e John Tuld (Jeremy Irons), l’amministratore delegato della società. Tuld propone uno spregiudicato piano di salvataggio per evitare la bancarotta: all'apertura dei mercati, dovranno vendere tutto al miglior prezzo di realizzo anche se questo significherà inondare il mercato di titoli tossici. Pur consapevole che ciò limiterà l'esposizione dell'azienda, Rogers avverte che questo determinerà il tradimento dei propri clienti e avrà un effetto domino senza precedenti su Wall Street. Mentre l’alba si avvicina, tutti sono costretti a decidere in fretta se proteggere l'interesse dei clienti o salvare il proprio lavoro. Appare sempre più evidente che la decisione avrà conseguenze drammatiche, non solo da un punto di vista finanziario ma anche etico.
