Une comète doit passer près de la Terre mais les calculs montrent qu'elle ne fera que la frôler en causant des interférences magnétiques. Un astrophysicien, James Mayfield, étudie de près ces perturbations car il pense que la comète pourrait tout de même frapper la Terre. Lorsqu'un fragment de l'astéroïde se détache et s'écrase en Alaska, James commence à soupçonner que les effets de la catastrophe vont bien au-delà des dégâts constatés au sol.
