Note : 1999 was of course the year of The Sixth Sense, and little kids seeing dead people got real popular, but this film actually came out just one month after The Sixth Sense, and was probably not directly influenced by it, yet kind of got forgotten in the churn. It's a shame, because it's a nice, creepy little supernatural mystery, with good performances from Kevin Bacon and a supporting cast of mostly TV actors. Writer/director David Koepp is of course a wildly successful screenwriter (Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, Carlito's Way, Spider-Man), although his attempts at directing have been of much more varied quality. I think he nails it here, though, and this is very worth seeing for fans of slow burn, subtle, creepy horror mysteries.
This remaster looks fine, although the film is relatively dark, and would have benefitted from a better transfer that retained some more detail in the shadows. Still, completely watchable, and the commentary track with David Koepp has some interesting observations about filmmaking on a (relatively) low budget.
