Heavy power trio from Mesa, Arizona. Mesa was never a psychedelic Mecca, but Bliss' roots and their first incarnation, The Sect, began there. In 1966, schoolchildren Brad Reed, Rusty Martin and Corky Aldred formed The Sect. A little later they were joined by Tom Smith (bass) and J.R. Lara (tambourine and vocals). Influenced by the "British Invasion", the band played gigs at the local Dungeon nightclub, changing their name to "The Henchmen" to match the surroundings. But this did not last long, and soon the group returned to its original name "The Sect". By the way, Brad Reed was only 15 years old at the time. During the summer of that year, the band caught the attention of legendary producer Hadley "Madley" Murrel, who was auditioning local talent. He immediately booked time for them at the famous "Audio Recorders" to record two singles. By the end of 1968, all five had graduated from high school and separated for a while. They reformed already as a trio (Reed, Martin, Aldred), calling themselves “Bliss” (“Bliss”). They re-teamed with Murrel to record a full length album, which was released by Canyon Records in 1969. During the recording of the album, more tracks were recorded, but then they were never released, but were included in the album “Return To Bliss” (2007).
