Each week, a cross-section of Australians will become art critics as they delve deeper into some of the most renowned works in the country. Across nine episodes, we share the amazing treasure trove of artifacts in Australian galleries. Our new critics see a wide range of colonial art, emerging Pacific Rim art, indigenous art and modern art. We look at sculpture and installations as well as paintings on a wall. We show that art can be fun, annoying, challenging, infuriating. No matter who we are, art always provokes a response. It challenges our beliefs, lifts our spirits, and reminds us who we are. Series Plot: Everyone's a Critic opens the doors into some of the nation's most prestigious art galleries. The Australian public are then invited in to deliver their opinions on works created by some of our most respected and iconic artistsRegardless of their education or knowledge of art, the ‘critics ' are asked in each episode to comment, interpret, and respond to a collection of works. Subjects including Australian identity, race relations, love, family, gender and pop culture are explored through paintings, installations, sculptures and photographyEveryone's a Critic is candid, emotional, humorous and at times controversial. Part art history, part critique it captures a cultural response to what has and what is happening in our world.Everyone's got a story, everyone's got an opinion, everyone's a critic.
Episode plot: The critics have their first of two trips to the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) in Sydney to view works by artists Edouard Detaille, Charles Meere, Uta Uta Tjangala, Geraldine Javier and Brett Whiteley.
