Sarah Casey convinces the reluctant Michael Byrne to marry her by threatening to run off with
another man. She accosts a local priest, and convinces him to wed them for ten shillings and
a tin can. Michael's mother shows up drunk and harasses the priest, then steals the can to
exchange it for more drink. The next morning Sarah and Michael go to the chapel to be wed,
but when the priest finds that the can is missing he refuses to perform the ceremony.

In the summer of 2005, Druid Theatre Company presented the first ever staging of John
Millington Synge’s entire theatrical canon. This ambitious collective presentation of all
six plays in the same day fulfilled a long-term artistic commitment by Druid’s artistic
director Garry Hynes to re-evaluate and re-engage with one of Ireland’s dramatic giants.
This mammoth project was filmed live by Wildfire during production.

No better illustration could be found than his friend and fellow director of the Abbey
Theatre, John Millington Synge. His masterpiece, The Playboy of the Western World, was
hooted from the stage 100 years ago today by irate nationalists. In their view, a national
theatre should have been showing a proud, dignified people, ready to accept the

This is a capture from streaming but not the original capture format. The aspect ratio
presented it in a pinched image. I spent some time learning how to fix anamorphic problems
in Handbrake to get this piece in a good viewable form. Please add it to your permanent
seeds.
The Tinker's Wedding completes the titles I have been able to preserve and archive

Garry Hynes founded Druid in 1975 with Marie Mullen and Mick Lally and has worked as its Artistic Director from 1975 to 1991, and from 1995 to date. From 1991 to 1994 she was Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre, Dublin.
