Season 9 - Episode 10
Jay Blades and the team bring three treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life.
Today’s first arrival is Diane Davies from Bolton, with a cherished pair of football boots that symbolise triumph over adversity. They belonged to her late father and are in desperate need of cobbler Dean Westmoreland’s expertise. Diane’s dad was a keen football player and a devoted fan before he was called up for service in the Second World War. After the war, he returned home and opened a successful shoe shop that he and his extended family ran for decades. The old boots were hung in the stock room for all to see and, after his death, provided a reminder of a brave and kind man. However, they are nearly 100 years old and are in a sorry state. Diane knows her father would be so pleased to know they had been given some TLC. Dean must draw on his years of experience and a few tricks of the trade to get these boots match-ready once again.
Silversmith Brenton West takes on a boxing trophy that was won by an accomplished sportsman and much-loved grandfather. Larry Gaines fought professionally from 1923 and refused to let prejudice hamper his career. He was the first black boxer to fight in the Royal Albert Hall, and his family are immensely proud of him. His granddaughter Janie Davis and her nephew Paul hope that Brenton can transform this rather tarnished, dented trophy, as it is all that the family have left of Larry's possessions.
And Klare Kennett delivers a broken globe, designed for the visually impaired, with each country slightly raised on the surface. It belonged to her father, who was blind, and Klare has fond childhood memories of time spent with her father and the globe talking about the countries she wanted to visit. This is a first for ceramics expert Kirsten Ramsay, and she needs her wits about her to piece together the many sections after an accidental fall smashed the globe to bits.
