DESCRIPTION

A regular family - Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three kids - travel to Thailand to spend Christmas. They get an upgrade to a villa on the coastline. After settling in and exchanging gifts, they go to the pool, like so many other tourists. A perfect paradise vacation until a distant noise becomes a roar. There is no time to escape from the tsunami; Maria and her eldest are swept one way, Henry and the youngest another. Who will survive, and what will become of them?

The Impossible è un film del 2012 diretto da Juan Antonio Bayona, basato sugli eventi realmente avvenuti il 26 dicembre 2004, quando un devastante tsunami si abbatté sulle spiagge della Thailandia.

Henry (Ewan McGregor) e Maria (Naomi Watts) sono una coppia sposata con tre figli, Lucas (Tom Holland), Thomas e Simon. Durante il periodo di Natale decidono di trascorrere le vacanze in un resort thailandese.

Quando la mattina del 26 dicembre la violenza dello tsunami travolge l'intero villaggio in cui soggiornano, le loro esistenze prenderanno direzioni diverse. Maria riemerge, gravemente ferita al torace e alla gamba, ritrovandosi sola con il figlio maggiore Lucas aggrappati a un albero, sul quale ha trovato rifugio anche un bambino, Daniel, sopravvissuto alla furia delle acque.

I tre vengono soccorsi e trasportati all'ospedale, dove Maria viene ricoverata a causa delle sue gravi condizioni fisiche. Nel frattempo Maria e Lucas ignorano che Henry, Thomas e Simon non sono morti ma sono riusciti a salvarsi in una stanza dell'albergo risparmiata dallo tsunami. Henry non si dà per vinto e dopo aver mandato Thomas e Simon al sicuro sulle montagne, va alla disperata ricerca della moglie e del figlio maggiore. In una battaglia per la sopravvivenza, solo l'amore gli darà la forza per riuscire a riunirsi di nuovo.
