Il mio vicino Totoro (Tonari no Totoro) è un film d'animazione giapponese prodotto dallo Studio Ghibli nel 1988, per la regia di Hayao Miyazaki.
Il personaggio di Totoro è stato in seguito utilizzato per il logo dello Studio Ghibli.
La storia è ambientata nell'hinterland della Tokyo degli anni cinquanta.
Le sorelline Satsuki e Mei (la prima di 11 anni e la seconda di 4) si stanno trasferendo col padre da lì a Matsu no Gô, villaggio di campagna.
Il trasferimento serve per andare a vivere più vicini alla loro mamma che è ricoverata in ospedale.
Inizia così il loro viaggio alla scoperta di un mondo nuovo, ma soprattutto alla scoperta della natura.
Il loro primo incontro è coi "nerini del buio" o "corrifuligine" ("makkurokurosuke" in originale, nel libro definiti "susuwatari"),
spiritelli della fuliggine che occupano le vecchie case abbandonate e che solo i bambini possono vedere (gli stessi spiritelli poi ripresi ne La città incantata).
In seguito Mei, esplorando la sua nuova casa e seguendo delle tracce di ghiande, s'imbatte in due spiritelli, uno piccolissimo dal pelo bianco e uno più grande e azzurro:
seguendoli fin dentro il grande albero di canfora che domina sulla zona, incontra Totoro, uno spirito buono dall'aspetto un po' pittoresco:
un incrocio tra una talpa, un orso e un procione.
È un personaggio che Mei ha già visto in un libro di fiabe, un troll, in giapponese tororu, ma la bambina avendo solo quattro anni ne storpia il nome in totoro...
My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro), is a 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli.
The film follows the two young daughters of a professor and their interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan.
The film won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize and the Mainichi Film Award for Best Film in 1988.
In 1958, the Kusakabe family reunites when a university professor and his two daughters, Satsuki and Mei (approximately ten and four years old, respectively)
move into an old house in rural Japan to be closer to the hospital where their mother is recovering from an unnamed, long-term illness.
The daughters find that the house is inhabited by tiny animated dust creatures called susuwatari — small, dark, dust-like house spirits seen when moving from light to dark places.
When the girls become comfortable in their new house and laugh with their father,
the soot spirits (identified as "black soots" in early subtitles and "soot sprites" in the later English dubbed version) leave the house to drift away on the wind.
It is implied that they are going to find another empty house--their natural habitat.
While she is playing outside one day, Mei sees two white, rabbit-like ears in the grass.
She follows the ears under the house where she discovers two small magical creatures (chibi or "dwarf" totoro and chu or "medium" totoro),
who lead her through a briar patch and into the hollow of a large camphor tree. She meets and befriends a larger version of the same kind of spirit (ō or "large" totoro),
which identifies itself by a series of roars that she interprets as "Totoro" (in the original Japanese dub, this stems from Mei's mispronunciation of the word for "troll").
She falls asleep atop the large totoro, but when Satsuki finds her, she is on the ground in a dense briar clearing.
Despite her many attempts, Mei is unable to show her family Totoro's tree.
Her father comforts her by telling her that this is the "keeper of the forest," and that Totoro will reveal himself when he wants to...
