Note : This film opened in theaters 42 years ago this week, and today is Friday the 13th, so this seemed like an obvious choice. Of the three big slasher franchises, this is the one that really codified the tropes that later became clichés, like the location in the woods by a lake, the local crazy who tries to warn everyone off, the perpetually horny teens with their jazz tobacco, and so on. It's also perhaps the simplest in story structure and concept, but no less effective. Also features a very young Kevin Bacon, and effects by Tom Savini.
Unless you've been living under a rock for the last 42 years, you know this story, but, some guy is trying to re-open infamous Camp Crystal Lake, a summer camp for kids that's been plagued by deaths and other misfortunes throughout its history. He hires a bunch of horny teens as councelors, and they arrive early to fix up the place before the kids get there. However, apparently whatever's been causing all the trouble in the camp is still around, and things don't go well for them.
This is a very good remaster, just about perfect amounts of grain, good contrast and color, nice detail, even in the blacks, which is good because this film is quite dark at times, and both a good 5.1 remaster and the original theatrical mono included. The commentary track is good too. The English subtitles had a lot of bad transcription errors and weirdness, but I think I corrected them all.
