The Northman, film diretto da Robert Eggers, è ambientato all'inizio del X secolo e racconta la storia di una vendetta, quella cercata dal giovane Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård). Il ragazzo è il figlio del re Horwendil (Ethan Hawke), ma alla morte del padre non ha mai preso il suo posto. Quando era ancora un bambino, Amleth si trovava nel bosco con suo padre, ma a un tratto diversi dardi feriscono il genitore, che gli intima di nascondersi. È così che il ragazzo assiste all'uccisione paterna per mano di suo zio, Fjölnir (Claes Bang). Amleth riesce a scappare e mettersi in mare per fuggire via, ma farà ritorno da adulto nella sua terra natia per vendicare Horwendil e salvare anche sua madre, la regina Gudrún (Nicole Kidman).
Nel viaggio per raggiungere le fredde coste che non tocca da anni, Amleth incontra Olga (Anya Taylor-Joy), una giovane a cui il ragazzo rivela il vero motivo per cui è lì: la vendetta e la riconquista del regno. È così che troverà in lei una valida compagna in questa lotta, in cui l'obiettivo è solo uno: uccidere Fjölnir.
