[MTBB] Eizouken Ni Wa Te Wo Dasu Na! - 07 [8FDF2156]
In this episode, Asakusa is unhappy with the work of her subcontractors (background artists), and she decides to fix up their work herself, since it's faster that way. But Kanamori points out that doing so will overload her and that she needs to learn to delegate, even though it takes an actual physical toll on her to tell other people what's wrong with their work.
Asakusa's dilemma comes up in fansubber project management, too. It's far easier as a QC person to make changes yourself rather than have a discussion with your staff about changes that need to be made--you can either change the blur from 0.6 to 0.9, or you can take a screenshot, ping the typesetter, explain the problem, and wait for them to fix it. Another example would be proper perspective work in typesetting, which is hard to explain/teach but fairly easy to do when you have the experience, meaning that it's usually just easier to make the fix yourself. Same with script errors as well. If a line reads awkwardly because of a missing contraction, it's just easier to add it instead of talking to the editor about it.
When I was working on this show, Fyurie told me that his philosophy as a QC was to defer greatly to the judgment/work of people working under him. Further, if he spotted a problem during QC, he'd send it back to the person responsible instead of fixing it himself. This strikes me as a very staff-friendly philosophy, but I think it probably led to the Eizouken release not being as good as it could have been. I trust Fyurie as an editor (I believe that's what he does for a living nowadays, in fact), so it's too bad that he didn't end up suggesting any script changes that weren't simply objective corrections that I can recall. And there were some fixable TS problems—shikawa's TS on this show is unassailable, but [name omitted]'s typesetting was usually 0.3 blur values too low, and that oversharp TS all made it to release.
But Fyurie's approach might be the *only* possible approach for running a large fansubbing group and retaining staff—as Kanamori says, you can't do everything yourself. And if you complain about everything, people might not want to work with you. I think my personal QC style is probably super abrasive and annoying—when QCing TS, I bitch about even subtle mistakes (like blur/glow issues) like no one's business, and when it comes to the script, I'm less a QC and more an Editor 2. (Sorry, cruelnoise.) Abrasive and invasive stuff like that can be forgiven if your staff has a lot of faith in you and your abilities as a fansubber, I guess, or if the QC-ee feels like they're learning something.
